rship of the god Aton, the solar disc, in place of all the other deities. In this new religion, the pharaoh and his family were direct intermediaries between the sun and the earth.\par
By this means Amenhotep IV hoped to put an end to the growing power
of the priests of Amon-Ra at Thebes.\par
He also abandoned the ancient capital of the kingdom, Thebes, building a new city in the locality now known as Amarna and which he called Akhetaton, the horizon of Aton.
